The Florida Keys backcountry consists of hundreds of islands (Keys) scattered amidst the biologically rich waters of the Florida Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. As you will see, there is a sharp contrast to the "mainland" Keys (linked by the Overseas Highway), Backcountry Keys, with few exceptions, are pristine, uninhabited islands in federal ownership that comprise three National Wildlife Refuges and a National Park.
You guide will point out tropical fish, Tarpon, turtles and if your lucky a Manatee along with rare birds and diverse vegetation.
These Islands are a haven for a wide array of wildlife, from nesting sea turtles to bald eagles. Many of these keys have been designated part of the National Wilderness Preservation System.
